While the Student Assembly has not taken a position on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act overall, we strongly oppose provisions that eliminate the Lifetime Learning Credit, employerprovided education assistance programs, and deductions for tuition, student loan interest, and related educational expenses. Our elected leaders have a responsibility to expand access to an affordable higher education, not limit opportunities.

Graduates should not be saddled with even more burdensome debt, which will inevitably hinder their ability to build a better life for themselves and for their families. The Student Assembly is committed to continuing dialogue with leaders in Washington to protect students and graduates of the State University of New York and colleges across the nation.

About the SUNY Student Assembly
The Student Assembly of the State University of New York (SUNY SA) is the recognized student government organization representing the nearly 600,000 students of the State University of New York. Comprised of student leaders elected by their peers from across SUNY’s 64 campuses, SUNY SA is committed to empowering students throughout the state, and ensuring the representation of its members on the state and national level, as well as throughout the SUNY system.
